The Day We Decided to Inhabit the Ecosystem

There was something about the way my friend dodged my questions that made me pause. At first, I thought he was simply trying to avoid the topic of Bitcoin. When I spoke to him about the importance of investing, about the fragility of the fiat system, he nodded with little emotion and quickly changed the subject. He rarely returned to my words to inquire further about the asset.
Months later, I understood the root of his silence. In his mind, Bitcoin was conceptualised exclusively as money. And yes, it is that for the most part, without a doubt. But this reductionist view had turned our conversations into a taboo. Because, let’s be honest: who among your friends or family members will reveal their true stores of value? Who will tell you how much treasure they have accumulated in secret? I understood that his silence was not ignorance, but an inherited defence mechanism. It was entirely understandable and respectable.
His keys, his seed, were safely stored. And that was enough for him. He asked no questions, explored nothing; he was content with the mental peace of knowing that his accumulation was well guarded.
However, when I noticed the static direction of our conversation, I realised that he was overlooking the true magnitude of the matter. He was satisfied with the surface, leaving aside the diversity of techniques for encrypting and securing the asset. He did not yet know the power of a cold wallet, had not yet experienced the vertigo and responsibility of self-custody, and certainly did not know what it means to live, breathe, and walk under the “effect of the orange pill”.
It is fascinating and at the same time revealing to observe how most people are content to have only “touched” on the topic. They buy, store their keys after a first move, and close the chapter. My friend lived in passive expectation: crouched, waiting to hear that “the price was low” to buy on any exchange platform, accepting KYC (Know Your Customer) without questioning what that implied. He gave up his identity to then return to his daily routine, almost like a child waiting for Bitcoin to perform some financial magic on its own.
This attitude transported me back to times gone by. I imagined our grandparents and great-grandparents collecting gold coins or jewellery in a wooden chest, burying it or hiding it in the cellar. The years passed, and they only opened the chest to put the next treasure inside, in the constant hope that their value would remain intact.
But Bitcoin is something else.
Obviously, the network allows one to continue accumulating in the old way. But since it is pure technology, unshakable software, Bitcoin transcends the idea of hiding a chest and opens the door for you to inhabit a living ecosystem. It challenges you to learn encryption techniques, to build your own devices, to be a sovereign nomad capable of carrying your wealth anywhere on the planet, without asking for permission, without having to declare your portability, and without any government being able to freeze your assets. For the first time in human history.
But this freedom is activated through practice, consistency, and personal transformation. And I had the deep desire for my friend to stop silently guarding his chest and start inhabiting his world with fullness.
The Catalyst: The Scars That Showed Us the Way
To understand why we took the definitive leap, we must look back. We had traversed several “waves” of systematic manipulation. The COVID season had marked us. We had to watch with heavy hearts as close family members and friends died or suffered irreversible psychological and physical damage after vaccination.
The most painful part was the social side effect: we noticed how in every individual who opted for the injection, an unusual, almost robotic temperament and behaviour remained. And the most complex of all: the deepest scar was the splitting of humanity into “two camps”. The vaccinated and the unvaccinated. Society fractured.
In my case, it was in 2023 that I began to delve deeper – with no possibility of turning back – into the search for decentralised social networks. This reality drove me to seek deeper answers. I began to understand the true meaning of the word “Decentral”. I grasped the psychological and social causes that led the majority of the population to obey blindly. And amidst those nights of study and practice, I found the missing link: the Nostr protocol, the DeSoc (Decentralised Social Network).
The Architecture of Freedom
Nostr was much more than just a tool; it was the revelation that financial freedom (Bitcoin) blooms in fullness when accompanied by freedom of thought and expression. We discovered an ecosystem capable of sustaining daily life: signing smart contracts, creating events, immutable calendars, and personal blogs (Longform Articles).
With patience, I taught my friend to distinguish his soul from his shadow: his private key (Nsec), which is his true identity, from his public key (Npub), his face to the world. He learned to configure his self-custodied wallet to receive Zaps (Sats).
And then he understood the beauty of true decentralisation. He saw that there are dozens of apps, each programmed by independent, anonymous developers, separate from one another. These interfaces only “hang” off the protocol. This allows us to avoid falling into bad practices of manipulation and centralisation by some applications that attempt to hijack the functioning of Lightning and users into a single, tiny “ecosystem”.
It is a space where no CEO can delete your account. Where no algorithm designs a “fantasy world” to keep you addicted and compliant. In Nostr, individual freedom and the truth of the network flourish naturally, because the protocol is built on decentralisation and the mathematical impossibility of censorship. There are only independent developers building with purpose.
What finally cemented his new paradigm was the discovery of the power of Zaps. He understood that we could now grow beyond the empty “likes” of corporate networks. We could interact, appreciate, and support posts, events, messages, and profiles by instantly transferring units of Bitcoin. The Zap was the materialisation of value flowing directly between sovereign humans, without intermediaries, with full freedom and without any need for permission.
The Call: Jump into the River, the Water is Yours
Today, in mid-2026, my friend already lives in the ecosystem. Every day he practices self-custody, every week he builds connections on Nostr, every interaction is a conscious act of sovereignty. He is the ecosystem.
And I write this to you, who have come to the end of these lines, because I know that you are at the exact point where he stood years ago. You are reading about the theory, analysing the charts, debating in your mind whether it is the right moment, whether the technology is safe, or whether it is worth the effort to break out of the comfort of the centralised system.
Let me tell you something: Sovereignty is understood by living it. The peace of Nostr is experienced by practising it.
Freedom is a muscle that is trained, a habit that is lived, a network that is woven with every node you build and every Zap you send. Every step you take in the ecosystem strengthens your autonomy and enriches the network that supports us all.
The world outside will keep moving. Algorithms will continue to try to shape realities, governments will continue to print debt, and society will continue to search for answers. But you already have the map. You have the keys. You have the protocol.
The moment is now. Take the step. The magic of Bitcoin and Nostr happens in the exact moment you decide that your time, your money, and your voice belong to you.
Configure your wallet. Write your seed on that paper or card. Create your profile on Nostr. Send your first Zap.
The chest is already open. The ecosystem awaits you with open arms. Welcome to reality.
